The West Coast Region (Te Kaunihera Whakakotahi o Te Tai Poutini) extends over a distance of 600 km from Kahurangi Point in the north to Awarua Point in the south. The fifth largest region in New Zealand, it is bounded in the east by the Southern Alps and in the west by the Tasman Sea. Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Finance Manager to provide strategic and operational financial leadership across Council and lead our Finance Team into the future.

About the role
Reporting to the Group Manager – Corporate Services, you will play a key role in ensuring strong financial governance, compliance and performance. You will work closely with leaders and elected members, providing trusted financial advice that supports informed decision-making and delivery of the Long-Term Plan, Annual Plan and Annual Report.

This is a senior role that goes beyond transactional finance — focusing on insight, continuous improvement and financial sustainability.

Desired Skills and Experience

What you will bring

  • Senior-level finance or accounting experience (7+ years) in a complex organisation
  • Strong experience in statutory reporting, budgeting, forecasting and audit management
  • Proven people leadership skills and the ability to develop a high-performing team
  • Excellent communication skills and the confidence to engage with senior leaders and elected members
  • A relevant tertiary qualification in accounting, finance or business (CAANZ membership desirable)
  • Local government or public-sector experience is advantageous
