The West Coast Region (Te Kaunihera Whakakotahi o Te Tai Poutini) extends over a distance of 600 km from Kahurangi Point in the north to Awarua Point in the south. The fifth largest region in New Zealand, it is bounded in the east by the Southern Alps and in the west by the Tasman Sea. Nature has endowed the Region with a spectacular environment, with over 80 per cent of the land area under Department of Conservation stewardship.

Within this vast natural setting, the West Coast Regional Council plays a pivotal role in managing the environment from an economic, social, cultural and sustainability perspective. This ensures the community and its future generations will continue to appreciate the work opportunities, environment, spectacular outdoors and life balance offered in this stunning part of New Zealand.

Job Description

Do you enjoy working outdoors, solving practical problems, and contributing to the care of our rivers, lakes, and waterways? Join the West Coast Regional Council as a Hydrology Technician and play a hands-on role in protecting one of Aotearoa’s most unique and dynamic environments.

As a Hydrology Technician, you will be right at the heart of how we manage and understand the West Coast’s water resources. Your work will support important decisions around flood management, water allocation, environmental protection, recreation, and infrastructure planning.

This is a varied, practical role combining fieldwork, technology, and data – from installing and maintaining monitoring equipment in some truly spectacular locations, to ensuring high-quality hydrological data is available to support our communities and environment.

Desired Skills and Experience

We are looking for someone who brings enthusiasm for environmental monitoring, strong practical skills, and a positive, team-focused attitude. You will be comfortable working outdoors in varied conditions, physically fit, well organised, and able to work independently when needed. A full Class 1 driver’s licence is required, and tertiary training in environmental science or a related field is desirable but not essential.

At the West Coast Regional Council, you will be part of a supportive, down-to-earth team doing meaningful work that matters. We offer a great lifestyle, genuine work-life balance, and the chance to build your career while enjoying everything the Coast has to offer.

If you are keen to combine technical work, the outdoors, and purpose-driven mahi, we would love to hear from you.

Among the many advantages of living and working for the West Coast Regional Council we offer a PSA Collective Employments Agreement.
