The West Coast Region (Te Kaunihera Whakakotahi o Te Tai Poutini) extends over a distance of 600 km from Kahurangi Point in the north to Awarua Point in the south. The fifth largest region in New Zealand, it is bounded in the east by the Southern Alps and in the west by the Tasman Sea. Nature has endowed the Region with a spectacular environment, with over 80 per cent of the land area under Department of Conservation stewardship.

Within this vast natural setting, the West Coast Regional Council plays a pivotal role in managing the environment from an economic, social, cultural and sustainability perspective. This ensures the community and its future generations will continue to appreciate the work opportunities, environment, spectacular outdoors and life balance offered in this stunning part of New Zealand.

Job Description

Do you enjoy hands-on environmental work and want to make a genuine difference for the West Coast community? Join the West Coast Regional Council as an Environmental Monitoring Officer and play a key role in protecting our rivers, lakes, air, land, and ecosystems for generations to come.

About the role
As an Environmental Monitoring Officer, your work will directly support informed decision-making that protects the West Coast’s outstanding natural environment. You will be part of our Environmental Quality team, collecting and managing high-quality environmental data that feeds into Council’s trusted databases and supports resource management across the region and beyond.

This is a varied and rewarding role that blends fieldwork, technical problem-solving, data analysis, and collaboration — perfect for someone who enjoys being outdoors, working with equipment, and contributing to meaningful environmental outcomes.

Desired Skills and Experience

We are looking for someone with a recognised tertiary qualification in science, engineering, or a related field, and at least three years’ experience in environmental fieldwork and technical equipment maintenance. You will bring a genuine interest in environmental monitoring and aquatic ecology, strong communication skills, attention to detail, and a practical, positive approach. You will be physically fit, comfortable working outdoors in varied conditions, confident with technology, and hold a full New Zealand driver’s licence.

At the West Coast Regional Council, you will be part of a friendly, supportive team doing meaningful work that matters. We offer a great work-life balance, opportunities to grow your skills, and the lifestyle benefits that come with living and working on the Coast.

If you are passionate about environmental protection and enjoy practical, purpose-driven work, we would love to hear from you.

Among the many advantages of living and working for the West Coast Regional Council we offer a PSA Collective Employments Agreement.
