The West Coast Region (Te Kaunihera Whakakotahi o Te Tai Poutini) extends over a distance of 600 km from Kahurangi Point in the north to Awarua Point in the south. The fifth largest region in New Zealand, it is bounded in the east by the Southern Alps and in the west by the Tasman Sea. Nature has endowed the Region with a spectacular environment, with over 80 per cent of the land area under Department of Conservation stewardship.
Within this vast natural setting, the West Coast Regional Council plays a pivotal role in managing the environment from an economic, social, cultural and sustainability perspective. This ensures the community and its future generations will continue to appreciate the work opportunities, environment, spectacular outdoors and life balance offered in this stunning part of New Zealand.
Job Description
Are you interested in improving Freshwater outcomes and working with West Coast communities? At the West Coast Regional Council, we are all about protecting our incredible natural environment while supporting local communities. We are looking for a motivated rural professional to work as a part of our Catchments Team supporting farmers to deliver on their biodiversity, water quality and productive farming aspirations. Every week will be different, whether its running community events, planting riparian zones, setting up trapping networks or organising funding for fencing this important work. This role will be as varied as you are motivated to deliver.
What You Will Do In this one (1) year fixed term role, you will gain valuable field and community engagement experience while supporting the formation of catchment groups across the West Coast. This role will sit amongst our current four-person team and has the flexibility to be full-time or part-time for the right candidate.
Plus, you will: ✅ Collect environmental data using GIS and GPS technology ✅ Assist with community outreach and education on freshwater management ✅ Support with event coordination and reporting ✅ Work closely with Poutini Ngāi Tahu to support cultural values and environmental goals
Desired Skills and Experience
What You Will Bring We are looking for someone who: ✔️ Has a keen interest in improving freshwater quality and protecting natural resources ✔️ A rural background with knowledge of the West Coast ✔️ Has an eye for detail and is comfortable learning GIS and GPS tools ✔️ Holds a full driver’s license and is physically fit for fieldwork
