The West Coast Region (Te Kaunihera Whakakotahi o Te Tai Poutini) extends over a distance of 600 km from Kahurangi Point in the north to Awarua Point in the south. The fifth largest region in New Zealand, it is bounded in the east by the Southern Alps and in the west by the Tasman Sea. Nature has endowed the Region with a spectacular environment, with over 80 per cent of the land area under Department of Conservation stewardship.

Within this vast natural setting, the West Coast Regional Council plays a pivotal role in managing the environment from an economic, social, cultural and sustainability perspective. Job Description

Are you passionate about the environment and looking for a meaningful way to spend your summer? Do you want to gain hands-on experience in conservation while working in one of New Zealand’s most stunning landscapes? If so, we have the perfect opportunity for you!

About the Role:
As a Summer Field Operator with Predator Free Te Kinga, you will be part of a dedicated team working to remove possums and reduce other predators from the beautiful Mt Te Kinga area and surrounding farmlands. You will contribute to the delivery of our annual work programme, helping us protect our precious native wildlife and preserve the natural beauty of the West Coast.

What You Will Do:
Work in the Field:
Install, maintain, and service trapping and other project infrastructure.
Team Collaboration: Communicate effectively with your team members, keeping everyone informed and working together smoothly.
Reporting & Documentation: Keep accurate records of your work and contribute to internal reporting.
Aerial Control Assistance: Support the team in delivering aerial pest control operations, ensuring public safety through clear signage and track clearance.

What We are Looking For:
Passion for the Outdoors: You love being out in nature, even in rugged and remote environments, and you are ready to take on physical work in all weather conditions.
Team Player: You work well with others and can also manage tasks independently when needed.
Community-Focused: You can interact professionally with community and are committed to fostering positive relationships.
Health & Safety Conscious: You understand the importance of safety in the field and are committed to following all health and safety guidelines.

Desired Skills and Experience

Qualifications:

  • A current full New Zealand driver’s licence (ability to drive manual transmission vehicles is a plus).
  • A First Aid Certificate.
  • Bush experience is essential.
  • A Controlled Substance Licence or the ability to acquire one is an advantage.
