The West Coast Region (Te Kaunihera Whakakotahi o Te Tai Poutini) extends over a distance of 600 km from Kahurangi Point in the north to Awarua Point in the south. The fifth largest region in New Zealand, it is bounded in the east by the Southern Alps and in the west by the Tasman Sea. Nature has endowed the Region with a spectacular environment, with over 80 per cent of the land area under Department of Conservation stewardship.
Within this vast natural setting, the West Coast Regional Council plays a pivotal role in managing the environment from an economic, social, cultural and sustainability perspective. This ensures the community and its future generations will continue to appreciate the work opportunities, environment, spectacular outdoors and life balance offered in this stunning part of New Zealand.
Job Description
Are you studying science, environmental science, engineering or something similar? Do you want to spend your summer getting hands-on experience?
Come and join our Environmental Science team for 12 weeks and get out into the West Coast environment!
You will be part of the team helping monitor the West Coast’s rivers, lakes, groundwater and coastal environments. Your summer could include:
Water sampling and river flow measurements
Environmental and biological assessments
Processing environmental data and creating graphs and reports
Working with monitoring equipment, sensors and data loggers
Getting out into some pretty amazing West Coast locations
Supporting experienced environmental monitoring staff in the field
You will learn on the job, develop practical skills and get a real taste of what a career in environmental science could look like.
Desired Skills and Experience
What we are looking for
You will need to be:
Studying towards a tertiary qualification in science, environmental science, engineering or a related field
The holder of a full NZ driver licence
Practical, reliable and keen to learn
Comfortable getting outdoors and getting your boots dirty!
Happy working around water, uneven terrain and in remote locations
A good communicator who enjoys being part of a team.
