The West Coast Region (Te Kaunihera Whakakotahi o Te Tai Poutini) extends over a distance of 600 km from Kahurangi Point in the north to Awarua Point in the south. The fifth largest region in New Zealand, it is bounded in the east by the Southern Alps and in the west by the Tasman Sea. Nature has endowed the Region with a spectacular environment, with over 80 per cent of the land area under Department of Conservation stewardship.
Within this vast natural setting, the West Coast Regional Council plays a pivotal role in managing the environment from an economic, social, cultural and sustainability perspective. We are looking for a casual Field Operator to join our Vector Control Services team. This is an exciting opportunity to work across some of New Zealand's most spectacular landscapes while helping protect our environment through pest control operations.
You will be part of a supportive team delivering field programmes safely, efficiently, and to a high standard. Whether you are working in remote locations, maintaining equipment, or working alongside landowners and colleagues, you will play an important role in achieving positive outcomes for the West Coast.
What you will be doing:
Carrying out pest control field operations across the West Coast.
Safely using and maintaining vehicles, equipment, and field gear.
Recording accurate field data and completing required documentation.
Working closely with your team while communicating professionally with landowners and stakeholders.
Following health and safety procedures and identifying potential risks.
Reporting field observations and any operational issues to your supervisor.
Desired Skills and Experience
What You Will Bring
✔️ A love for the outdoors and the ability to work in remote and rugged environments
✔️ A full NZ driver’s licence (bonus if you can drive manual vehicles)
✔️ A Controlled Substance Licence or the ability to obtain (and maintain) one
✔️ Experience in bush work, trapping, or pest control (or a willingness to learn!)
✔️ Strong teamwork skills and a positive, can-do attitude
✔️ First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)
✔️ Experience using GPS, radios, and data collection apps (an advantage)
Previous experience in pest control, conservation, farming, forestry, or other outdoor field work would be an advantage, but it's not essential—we are happy to train the right person with the right attitude.
