Are you looking for a role where your engineering expertise directly protects communities, shapes landscapes, and delivers meaningful environmental outcomes?

At West Coast Regional Council, we are proud of the work we do to support our region – and we are looking for an experienced Area Engineer to join us in the Buller region.

About the role
This is a hands-on role where you will oversee the planning, design, delivery, and maintenance of flood protection, river, drainage, and coastal infrastructure across multiple rating districts.

You will work across the full project lifecycle – from investigations and design through to construction and asset management – while building strong relationships with landowners, contractors, and the wider community.

You will also play an important role in Civil Defence response, helping protect our communities during natural hazard events.

  • Managing contracts, budgets, and work programmes
  • Overseeing flood protection and drainage assets across 23 rating districts
  • Providing technical advice on river, coastal, and flood management
  • Working closely with stakeholders, landowners, and partner agencies
  • Supporting asset management planning and continuous improvement
  • Responding to natural hazard events when they arise

Desired Skills and Experience

What you will bring

  • A qualification in Civil Engineering or a related field
  • Solid experience (10+ years) in engineering, with strong project delivery capability
  • Proven experience managing construction works and contracts
  • Expertise in river, drainage, coastal or environmental engineering
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and communication skills
  • The ability to think strategically while delivering practical, on-the-ground outcomes
  • A proactive, solutions-focused approach and sound judgement

Why join us?

At West Coast Regional Council, we are more than just a workplace – we are a team that genuinely cares about our people, our environment, and our communities.

You will enjoy:

  • A supportive, down-to-earth team environment
  • Autonomy and trust to make decisions
