The West Coast Region (Te Kaunihera Whakakotahi o Te Tai Poutini) extends over a distance of 600 km from Kahurangi Point in the north to Awarua Point in the south. The fifth largest region in New Zealand, it is bounded in the east by the Southern Alps and in the west by the Tasman Sea. Nature has endowed the Region with a spectacular environment, with over 80 per cent of the land area under Department of Conservation stewardship.

Within this vast natural setting, the West Coast Regional Council plays a pivotal role in managing the environment from an economic, social, cultural and sustainability perspective. This ensures the community and its future generations will continue to appreciate the work opportunities, environment, spectacular outdoors and life balance offered in this stunning part of New Zealand.

Job Description

At the West Coast Regional Council, our work is all about making a real difference for our people, communities, and environment. We are looking for a talented Principal Planning & Reporting Officer to join our team – someone who can bring expertise, initiative, and collaboration to a role that sits at the very heart of Council’s strategic direction.

This is a pivotal role where you will help shape the big picture. From leading the development of our Long-Term Plan, Annual Plan, and Annual Report, to coordinating audits, policies, and procedures, your work will provide our community with a clear, transparent view of where we are going and how we are performing along the way.

What you will be doing:

  • Leading the project management and delivery of the Long-Term Plan and Annual Plan, ensuring they capture our region’s strategic goals and community aspirations.
  • Coordinating effective community engagement and consultation to make sure local voices are heard and reflected.
  • Overseeing the development and delivery of the Annual Report, working closely with the Office of the Auditor General and teams across Council.
  • Supporting the design, review, and development of Council’s corporate policies and standard operating procedures (excluding H&S).
  • Managing Council’s internal and external audit programme (excluding H&S), providing valuable insights to strengthen processes and compliance.

Desired Skills and Experience

What you will bring:

  • 3–5 years’ experience in planning and reporting, ideally in local government or a related sector.
  • Strong project management skills and the ability to juggle multiple priorities.
  • A solid understanding of the Local Government Act and planning/reporting requirements.
  • Excellent communication skills – you will be able to translate complex information into clear, community-focused outcomes.
  • A proactive, collaborative mindset and a genuine desire to contribute to a stronger, more resilient West Coast.

Why join us?
At the West Coast Regional Council, we are a close-knit team who care deeply about the work we do and the place we live. The Coast offers a lifestyle like no other – with mountains, rivers, and beaches right on your doorstep, and a community that values connection and balance. Here, your skills will have impact, and your career will grow alongside the future of our region.

If you are looking for a role where you can combine professional challenge with meaningful community outcomes, we would love to hear from you.
