The West Coast Region (Te Kaunihera Whakakotahi o Te Tai Poutini) extends over a distance of 600 km from Kahurangi Point in the north to Awarua Point in the south. The fifth largest region in New Zealand, it is bounded in the east by the Southern Alps and in the west by the Tasman Sea. Nature has endowed the Region with a spectacular environment, with over 80 per cent of the land area under Department of Conservation stewardship.

Within this vast natural setting, the West Coast Regional Council plays a pivotal role in managing the environment from an economic, social, cultural and sustainability perspective. This ensures the community and its future generations will continue to appreciate the work opportunities, environment, spectacular outdoors and life balance offered in this stunning part of New Zealand.

Job Description

At the West Coast Regional Council, we are big believers that people are at the heart of everything we do – and we are on the lookout for someone who shares that passion. If you are an experienced HR leader who thrives on building positive workplace culture, shaping strategy, and rolling up your sleeves when needed, this could be your next adventure.

This is not just any HR role – this is your chance to make a real difference in a tight-knit Council that serves one of the most unique and spectacular regions in Aotearoa. In this role you will help us grow, develop, and support our greatest asset: our people.

What you will be doing

  • Partnering with our CEO and SLT to make sure our people strategy aligns with the big picture for our region.
  • Leading all things HR – from recruitment and development, to performance, wellbeing, and everything in between.
  • Championing a positive, values-driven culture where people feel engaged, supported, and inspired.
  • Guiding leaders and managers with expert advice and practical solutions.
  • Driving initiatives that build capability, support diversity and inclusion, and set us up for the future.
  • Keeping us on track with employment law, health & safety, and HR best practice.

Desired Skills and Experience

What you will bring

  • At least 7 years’ progressive HR experience, with 3+ years at senior or managerial level.
  • A tertiary qualification in HR, business, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of New Zealand employment law and HR best practice.
  • A knack for building trust, influencing at all levels, and leading change.
  • A mix of strategic thinking and a hands-on approach to making things happen.
  • A genuine interest in people, culture, and creating a great place to work.

Why join us?

At WCRC, we are proud to do meaningful work that supports our communities and environment. We are also proud of the culture we have built – one where collaboration, integrity, and service matter, and where we look out for one another.

Here, you will not just be another cog in the machine – you will be part of a team where your ideas are valued, your work makes a difference, and your weekends can be spent enjoying the incredible playground we call the West Coast. (Think tramping, fishing, surfing, hunting… or just soaking up the scenery with a good coffee in hand.)

If you are ready to lead with heart, bring people along for the journey, and have some fun along the way, we would love to hear from you.
